Established in 1591, the temple was petitioned by a temple from the Murakami area of Echigo (modern day Niigata Pref.). In the Zen meditation hall every morning, chokafugin (religious service) is practiced at 5:00am, and gyotenzazen (Zen meditation) is practiced at 6:00. Anyone is welcome to participate.The fukuju inari (lucky fox) shrine on the temple grounds is believed to prevent fires and aid in the discovery of missing things.Jofukuji is the temple of Daikokuten, the god of wealth, and one of Iiyama's Seven Deities of Good Fortune.
