The family temple of Iiyama Castle lord Izumi Shigenobu, Eiganji is the oldest temple in central Iiyama.According to legend, one of warlord Uesugi Kenshin's barons, a spear master named KojimaYataro, often known as "Oni (devil)," suffered severe wounds during a campaign. On his way home to Niigata prefecture's Kasuga Mountain castle, Yataro committed suicide in Iiyama, and is now interred in a grave behind the temple.In the garden, century old Paulownia trees bloom in June, spreading a floral scent around the temple.Eiganji is the temple of Fukurokuju, the god of wealth and longevity, and one of Iiyama's Seven Deities of Good Fortune.
