Iiyama cityShinto Shrines & Buddhist temples
This temple is believed to be the oldest in Iiyama. Home to the guardian god protecting Iiyama Castle, the temple enjoyed great respect from castle rulers. It was also closely tied to everyday life in the city, and included in celebrations like the Shichigosan festival. (The festival involves a shrine visit by 3, 5, and 7 year old children.)Not far from the temple, the remains of a Jomon era (12,000 BC - 300 BC) settlement can be found, and earthenware from the Jomon and Yayoi (300 BC - 300 AD) periods is frequently excavated from the area. In fact, the name "Iiyama" may be derived from "Iikasayama."Iikasayama is the temple of Ebisu, the god of fishing and commerce, and one of Iiyama's Seven Deities of Good Fortune.
