HokuryukoNatural beauty untouched by mankind
The rice fields of Iiyama City's Fukushima district hold a place on the list of top 100 terraced rice fields in Japan. These unique fields, built atop natural fieldstone, were originally developed during the Edo Period. Left fallow for decades, the fields were restored in 1998 by the Terraced Field Preservation Association.
In recent years, the community has come to play a larger role in their preservation, with elementary students participating in seed planting (May) and rice harvesting (September) events. Visitors are also welcome to participate in these events.
