During new years visits in 1609, priest Shakushin caught the eye of Iiyama lord Hori&Tangonokami, who granted lands to build the temple. Zenkakuji is the burial place of Nakano Fuhaku Koji, a close friend of famed Rinzai Buddhist priest Dokyo Etan.
